Helnæs Fiskerhuse

Helnæs Fiskerhuse is a bathing beach located on the eastern side of Helnæs in a very shallow water area within Helnæs Bay and Nørrefjord. The beach extends approximately 200 metres in length and 5 metres in width, with a shoreline composed primarily of a mixture of sand and stones, though fine sand is present near the access road from the car park. The seabed consists mainly of sand with shallow water conditions. Water classification is rated as Excellent according to regulations based on the last four years of bathing water data.

Water

Helnæs Bay and Nørrefjord in the western Baltic Sea. The area is relatively enclosed with no dominant current direction and generally small current speeds. Water salinity varies depending on current direction due to influence from both low-salinity Baltic water and higher-salinity water from the Little Belt. The seabed consists primarily of sand with shallow water conditions.

Location

Helnæs Fiskerhuse is located on the east side of Helnæs. Parking is available approximately 80 metres from the beach, with toilets and information boards located at the car park.

Season

Official monitoring season: 1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water classification: Excellent. From 2022, a minimum of 10 water samples are collected during the bathing season (1 June to 1 September) to monitor bathing water quality. Sample results are published on the municipality's website. Water quality has been good or excellent over the last four years based on indicator bacteria measurements.

Risks

Municipal stormwater outlet at the beach edge for road water drainage. Tar-contaminated wetland area southeast of the beach with an outlet east of the access way; swimming is discouraged directly in front of this outlet. Heavy rainfall can cause deterioration in water quality including poor visibility and short-term faecal contamination via private and municipal discharge pipes. Minor concentrations of faecal bacteria may come from bathing animals and humans or large bird colonies. Risk of cyanobacteria is low due to the enclosed fjord location, though blooms typically occur after rainy periods followed by warm weather. Bleaching plantain has not been previously observed. Large seaweed wash-ups are rare.
