Hessel Strand is a beach approximately 500 metres long composed of sand and stones, located about 1 kilometre southwest of Hvalpsund Ferry Harbour. The beach is normally 10–15 metres wide at standard water levels. Water depth reaches approximately 1 metre at 40 metres from shore and 2 metres at 80 metres from shore, with a relatively even bottom. Current is minimal and typically follows wind direction. Swimming is not recommended at this location.

Water

Fjord beach approximately 500 metres long. Water depth is approximately 1 metre at 40 metres from land and 2 metres at 80 metres from land. Beach width is approximately 10–15 metres at normal water levels.

Location

Located approximately 1 kilometre southwest of Hvalpsund Ferry Harbour. Access is via Strandvejen past Valøre Hage, with parking available at a car park immediately after. A larger continuous summer house area and agricultural land are located northeast of the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as poor. Classification is based on analysis results from the preceding four years. Poor water quality is caused by occasional wastewater discharge from the summer house area. E. coli levels have occasionally exceeded 100 in samples taken immediately after heavy rain and wind, primarily from wastewater pipeline outlets from the summer house area and a stormwater outlet approximately 250 metres north of the bathing area.

Risks

Known sources of faecal pollution from summer house wastewater pipelines and a stormwater outlet connected to a bog. Occasional algae (macroalgae/seaweed) may wash ashore; bathing is not recommended if large quantities are present. No recent cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms are documented. Risk of phytoplankton growth is assessed as very low.
