Sundsøre Strand

Sundsøre Strand is a bathing beach located on the western side of Risgårde Bredning opposite Hvalpsund. The beach stretches approximately 600 metres westward from the south side of a peninsula. The eastern end features sandy beach with gravel and shells suitable for bathing, while the western end is stony. The beach is approximately 300 metres long and 5–10 metres wide, with the widest area at the bathing pier. Water quality is classified as excellent, the highest classification possible.

Water

Shallow coastal water body with sandy seabed containing small stones. Water temperature varies between 10 °C and 22 °C during the bathing season. The distance from the shore to 2 metres depth is approximately 60–100 metres. Salinity is saltwater. Surface current flows predominantly from south to north due to freshwater and brackish water inflow to Skive Fjord and Lovns Bredning, though wind-driven currents can vary significantly.

Location

Sundsøre Strand is located at Sundsørevej, 7870 Roslev, Denmark. Access is via a side road off Sundsørevej with parking available at the end of the side road.

Facilities

Bathing pier set up in summer, primitive ball court, tables and benches, rubbish bins, information board about walking routes at Sundsøre, toilet and kiosk at the harbour.

Season

April 1 to September 30 (dogs must be on leash during this period).

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on E. coli and enterococci data from 2016–2019. Analysis of bathing water data over the preceding five years shows very stable conditions and low bacterial levels.

Risks

Risk of algal blooms of various microscopic algae species during bathing season. High risk of periods with significant washed-up seaweed and eelgrass. Blue-green algae risk is low due to high salinity in the area. Low risk of faecal contamination, boat toilet tank discharge, manure spillage, oxygen depletion, chemical pollution from ships, and Pacific oyster occurrence. Pollen accumulations are a recurring phenomenon. Symptoms of exposure to blue-green algae toxins include headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Transparent visibility to knee depth is the threshold for safe bathing.
