Hessellund Søcamping

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Hessellund Camping is an artificial bathing lake located within the Hessellund Camping site, approximately 200 metres into the campground area. The lake measures about 50 by 100 metres and is accessible around its entire perimeter. The beach consists of sand and grass, with a wooden jetty and stairs leading into the water. The water is typically clear and clean with a sandy bottom. Water temperature in summer ranges from approximately 14 to 22 degrees Celsius.

Water

Artificial lake approximately 50 by 100 metres. Maximum depth approximately 2 metres. Bottom is firm sand sloping gently towards the centre. Water sourced from a spring with outlet to Karup River. Current is generally non-existent.

Location

Hessellund Camping, Viborg Municipality, Denmark. The bathing site is located 200 metres within the Hessellund Camping grounds, bordering Karup Valley approximately 100 metres away. Parking is available at the campground.

Facilities

Parking, good disabled access, toilets, kiosk, bathing stairs.

Bathing season monitoring conducted routinely throughout the season.

Water Quality

Water classified as Excellent quality for 2023 based on data from 2020–2023. Routine monitoring conducted throughout the bathing season for two indicator bacteria: E. coli and enterococci. No point sources of pollution identified including no combined sewer overflows, treatment plant discharges, unsewered area discharges, or stormwater system discharges. The site has been connected to public sewers since 1997 with separate sewage system and infiltration of roof and road water.

Risks

Risk of algal bloom, particularly from April to October during periods of warm, still, and sunny weather. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) problems in late summer following prolonged warm and sunny conditions. Nutrient leaching from agricultural areas in the catchment may occur but is not assessed as directly problematic for bathing water quality, though it can affect algae growth.
