Hesteskoen is a bathing beach located in the Limfjord approximately 7 kilometres east of Aalborg. The beach is 250 metres long with a sandy shore containing some stones. The water is shallow, with a depth of approximately 1 metre at the end of the longest bathing pier. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on monitoring of indicator bacteria over the last four years.

Water

The Limfjord is a shallow water body with typical salinity of 22–30 ‰. Water depth is approximately 1 metre at the end of the longest bathing pier, which extends 90 metres from the shore. The bottom consists of sand with organic material. Current direction is variable, predominantly shifting between northerly and easterly flow.

Location

Hesteskoen bathing beach is situated in the Limfjord approximately 7 kilometres east of Aalborg, close to the East Harbour. The beach is 250 metres long and 3–6 metres wide.

Facilities

Two bathing piers with 160 metres spacing (approximately 90 metres and 20 metres in length). Life jackets, waste bins, and toilets are available at the bathing area.

Season

Water quality monitoring is conducted during the bathing season. Minimum water quality surveillance is performed four times per year.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent. Water quality is monitored during the bathing season for two indicator bacteria: E. coli and intestinal enterococci. The classification is calculated using concentration data from the last four years. Possible pollution sources include four small streams discharging at the beach (two southeast and two southwest of the beach), scattered household wastewater from 8–10 properties in the catchment area, and allotment gardens. The East Harbour and Nordjyllandsværket power station are not considered significant sources of water quality impairment.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation at the shoreline; bathing is discouraged in areas with large quantities of seaweed. Risk of cyanobacteria bloom in the Limfjord, which can cause skin irritation and poisoning if contaminated water is ingested. Risk of phytoplankton bloom due to relatively high nutrient content in the fjord. Four small streams discharge into the beach area with minimal expected impact. Glass, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur.
