Husmoderstranden is a sandy beach located in the western part of Hirtshals, facing the Skagerrak strait. The beach is approximately 60 meters wide at its widest point and 250 meters long, composed of fine sand with scattered small stones. The water has been classified as excellent quality based on routine monitoring of fecal indicator bacteria between 2011 and 2014. The beach is situated in a harbor town with 6,268 inhabitants, bordered by natural areas and dunes to the east.

Water

Saltwater body in Skagerrak. Water depth under 2 meters extends approximately 400 meters from the coast. Primary current direction is from the southwest, though current direction is variable. Depth conditions are generally variable over short periods due to tidal, current, and weather conditions.

Location

Hirtshals, a harbor town in Denmark with 6,268 inhabitants. The beach is accessed via Vestmolevej, where parking is available at the beginning of the road. The town lies east of the beach, and Hirtshals Camping is located to the south.

Season

Routine water quality monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Water quality classification is revised annually before the start of the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring for E. coli and enterococcus bacteria during the bathing season. Two discharge outlets exist in the area that may influence water quality during rainfall: a combined sewer outlet 150 meters north and a stormwater outlet 450 meters away. Extensive renovation of the sewer network in Hirtshals means the combined sewer outlet now functions primarily as a stormwater outlet, with overflow expected to occur less than once every 10 years.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) being washed ashore is low. Two discharge outlets can release fecal bacteria during heavy rainfall. Swimmers are advised not to bathe directly at the discharge outlets. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Sudden contamination from ship accidents, manure tankers, and sewer leaks is possible.
