Skallerup Strand is a fine sand beach with scattered small and medium-sized stones located at the Feriebyen Skallerup Seaside Resort holiday area. The beach features steep dunes to the east and has been equipped with a stairway access point. Approximately 400 meters of coastal protection was installed in 2023 along parts of the beach south of the sampling point. The bathing water has been classified as excellent quality based on routine monitoring of fecal indicator bacteria between 2020 and 2023.

Water

Saltwater in the Skagerrak. Water depth under 2 meters extends approximately 100 meters from the coastline. Current direction is variable and primarily from the southwest. Seabed composition consists of fine sand with scattered small and medium-sized stones, with larger stones along the escarpments.

Location

Located at Feriebyen Skallerup Seaside Resort in the municipality of Hjørring, Denmark. Knoldebæk stream has its outlet approximately 450 meters southwest of the sampling point. The resort area is situated east of the beach with steep cliffs separating it from the shore.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine sampling conducted regularly between 2020 and 2023, measuring E. coli and enterococcus bacteria as fecal indicators. The classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins. The Hjørring Municipality is not aware of any wastewater discharges affecting bathing water quality at this beach.

Risks

Knoldebæk stream outlet is located 450 meters southwest of the sampling point; swimmers are advised not to bathe in or near the stream outlet. Risk of cyanobacterial bloom is low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom is low. Risk of macroalgae washup is low. Sudden pollution can occur from ship accidents, slurry tanks, and sewer lines. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
