Tornby Strand

Tornby Strand is a bathing beach located 3.5 km southeast of the village of Tornby in Denmark. The beach consists of fine sand without larger stones and is approximately 100 metres wide at its widest point and 500 metres long. The beach is situated in a holiday area with hotels, restaurants, summer houses, and a camping facility. The water body is salt water classified as Skagerrak.

Water

Salt water in Skagerrak. Water depth under 2 metres extends approximately 150 metres from the shore according to topographic surveys. Primary current direction is from the southwest. Water depth conditions are variable due to tides, currents, and weather conditions.

Location

Tornby Strand is located 3.5 km southeast of Tornby village. The beach is accessed via a road with a descent point marked on the overview map. Parking is available at the beach entrance area.

Season

Routine monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Annual classification review takes place in May.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Udmærket). Classification is based on routine sampling from 2011–2014 using indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci. The beach is monitored regularly during the bathing season. Classification is reviewed annually before the start of the bathing season.

Risks

A storm water pipe outlet is located approximately 50 metres south of the beach access point and poses risk of high fecal bacterial concentrations during rain. Elbæk stream borders the area to the north and Øksenbæk stream has an outlet 1 km to the south; bathing is not recommended directly at these stream outlets due to risk of high fecal bacterial concentrations. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is assessed as low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is assessed as low. Risk of large quantities of macroalgae being washed ashore is assessed as low. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur.
