Kalvehave Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Kalvehave Strand is a 400-meter-long beach composed of fine sand with few small stones, located in Kalvehave on Stege Bay. The beach is 5–10 meters wide and features a bathing pier. The surrounding area is part of an attractive park with views toward Viemose Forest to the north. Water depth increases gradually offshore and is suitable for children. The beach is monitored regularly for bathing water quality during the official season from 1 June to 1 September.

Water

Stege Bay, classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually offshore, remaining under 2 meters for approximately 250 meters from the shore. Current direction is variable, primarily from the south, based on observations from 2006–2010.

Location

Kalvehave, accessed via Strandvej road leading to a large parking area adjacent to the beach and park. Benches and tables are available at the beach.

Toilets at parking area, benches, tables, bathing pier, parking, rescue ring.

Season

1 June to 1 September (official monitoring period).

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality. Classification is based on routine monitoring for indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) conducted during the bathing season. The classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Rainwater discharge 100 meters south of the beach may contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria during heavy rainfall. Low risk of cyanobacteria blooms and phytoplankton blooms. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washing ashore. Glass shards and litter may occur. Chemical pollution risk is very low. Sudden contamination from boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewage lines is possible.
