Sandvig Strand is a 250-metre-long beach located on the coast of Fakse Bay near the small marina at Sandvig. The beach is 20 metres wide with a bathing platform extending over vegetated areas. The seabed consists of fine sand without stones, and water depth increases gradually, making it suitable for children. The beach is situated in a quiet, green, and naturally beautiful area.

Water

Brackish water (brakvand) in Fakse Bay. The seabed consists of fine sand. Water depth is under 2 metres within 200 metres from the shore. Current direction is variable with no primary current direction; current directions were assessed 56 times between 2006-2010.

Location

Sandvig, near Vordingborg Kommune in Denmark. The beach can be accessed via Sandvigvej, which leads to a large car park before the marina. The beach is a few minutes' walk from the car park. Parking and toilet facilities are available.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as Excellent quality based on routine monitoring between 2007-2010. The classification is based on analysis of faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). The classification is revised annually before the bathing season. A discharge outlet south of the beach functions as a recipient for septic tank effluent from northern Sandvig and the marina toilet; swimming is discouraged in and around this outlet, but has low influence on water quality within the defined bathing area.

Risks

Discharge outlet south of the beach can contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria in periods. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom is low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom is low. Risk of large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) washup is low. Risk of chemical pollution (such as oil spills) is very low. Glass shards and litter may occur. Sudden pollution from incidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, or sewage pipes is possible.
