Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Karby is a bathing beach located on southern Mors in Denmark, featuring a broad sandy beach approximately 300 meters long and 10–15 meters wide with few stones. The seabed consists primarily of fine sand with occasional stones. Water depth increases gradually, requiring approximately 500 meters from the shore to reach 2 meters depth. The beach is situated within a Natura 2000 area comprising Habitat Area 77 and EU Bird Protection Area 25.

Water

Limfjorden, classified as saltwater. Dominant current directions are from west and southwest. Water depth increases gradually; approximately 500 meters from shore is required to reach 2 meters depth.

Location

Southern Mors, Denmark. Access via Ørndrupvej at the church, turning down Engdraget. The immediate catchment area consists mainly of beach meadow and grazed agricultural land.

Water Quality

Classified as satisfactory quality based on routine control samples taken during the bathing season in 2013–2016, analysed for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria. Classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins. Ejstrup Bæk discharges approximately 100 meters north of the beach and is known to be affected by wastewater periodically, which can impact bathing water quality.

Risks

Ejstrup Bæk periodically carries wastewater that can affect water quality; bathing near the stream outlet is not recommended. Risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms is assessed as low but can occur during prolonged warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation may occur during periods of strong onshore wind. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur.
