Skyum Østerstrand

Skyum Østerstrand is a bathing beach located on Limfjorden approximately 4 km east of Koldby in Thisted Municipality, Denmark. The beach is approximately 8 meters wide and 2 km long, featuring sand with many small stones. The water is clear, calm, and child-friendly. The beach borders a nature reserve and is situated near the hilly landscape of Skyum Bjerge, with a summer cottage area immediately to the west.

Water

Limfjorden. Water is approximately 8 meters wide and 2 km long. South of the bathing pier, water reaches 2 meters depth approximately 190 meters from the shoreline. North of the bathing pier, water becomes deeper more quickly. Salinity ranges from 18–30 psu. Summer water temperature ranges from 14–19 degrees Celsius. Local rip currents and fjord currents vary significantly depending on wind and tidal conditions.

Location

Located on Limfjorden near Skyum, approximately 4 km east of Koldby. Access via route 11 (Oddesundvej) turning toward Skyum on Tøttrupvej for approximately 2.7 km, then following Skyumvej for approximately 800 m, then Østerstrandsvej for approximately 1.3 km. A parking area is available on the left side of the road, approximately 60 meters from the water's edge.

Facilities

Parking area, bathing pier, tables and benches, toilet and waste bin, playground, recreational area with football goal and volleyball net.

Season

Monitoring occurs throughout the bathing season. Optimal conditions for algae growth can occur from April to October.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent, the highest classification available. Classification is based on data from four years of water quality analyses. No point source pollution from combined sewers, treatment plants, or discharge systems is identified. Non-sewered areas in the catchment do not pose a risk based on monitoring results. Nutrient and pesticide leaching from agricultural land in the catchment occurs but does not directly cause water quality problems. Algal blooms and blue-green algae have not been observed in the area.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washup during strong winds and onshore winds, which can create aesthetic problems and smell unpleasant as decomposition occurs, though washup is generally harmless to humans. Algal blooms and blue-green algae are possible during extended periods of warm, calm, sunny weather typically from April to October, though none have been observed in the area.
