Kelstrup Strand

Kelstrup Strand Nord is a 450-meter-long, south-facing beach composed of fine sand with a strip of small stones and crushed mussel shells running through the middle. The water deepens slowly with small waves and no strong currents, making it very child-friendly. The beach is located near the summer house area of Kelstrup Strand along Sandvig in Haderslev Municipality, Denmark.

Water

Brackish water in the Little Belt (Lillebælt). Water depth increases gradually, remaining under 2 meters within 125 meters of the shore. The beach is 450 meters long and 10–15 meters wide. The seabed in front of the beach consists of fine sand with small stones in the water edge.

Location

Kelstrup Strand Nord is situated at Sandvig in the summer house area of Kelstrup Strand, Haderslev Municipality. The beach is east of the summer house area Hejsager Strand. Parking is available.

Facilities

Toilets, drinking water, waste bins, disabled access facilities, rescue ring, Blue Flag designation, information signage, parking, emergency telephone, lifeguard warning signs, and bathing prohibition notifications.

Season

Routine monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring for indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) from 2012–2015. Hejsager Bæk discharges at the eastern end of the beach and may contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria during rainfall but has low influence within the designated swimming area. A minor stream discharges near the western end with similar risk characteristics. Kelstrup Bæk discharges 700 meters west of the beach and may contain high fecal bacteria concentrations during rainfall but has low influence within the designated swimming area.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (large seaweed) accumulation is low. Three stream outflows present occasional fecal bacteria contamination during rainfall; bathing is discouraged in stream outlets. Chemical pollution risk is very low. Glass and litter can occur but trash bins are provided. Sudden contamination from accidents (e.g., fuel spills, slurry tanks, sewage lines) is possible.
