Knud Strand is a 170-meter-long natural beach located on the Little Belt (Lillebælt) southeast of a small holiday home area in Haderslev Municipality, Denmark. The beach consists of fine sand with stones of various sizes, and the seafloor is composed of fine sand. The water is classified as brackish. The beach is 2 to 8 meters wide with a gently sloping seabed, reaching depths under 2 meters within 300 meters of the shore.

Water

Brackish water body (Little Belt). The beach is 170 meters long and 2 to 8 meters wide. Water depth is under 2 meters at 300 meters from the shore. Water depth increases gradually offshore. Current direction is variable, primarily from the south.

Location

Knud Strand is located on the Little Belt southeast of a small summer cottage area in Haderslev Municipality. Access is via Knud Strand road, which leads to a small parking lot at the beach. A green area between the parking lot and the shore provides amenities and atmosphere at this natural beach.

Season

1 June to 1 September. Routine monitoring of water quality occurs during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent based on routine monitoring of indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) during the bathing season. Classification is based on control samples taken regularly during 2012–2015 and is revised annually before the start of the bathing season.

Risks

Rainwater drainage outlets with concrete pipes located directly below the access path and south of the beach boundary release water containing high concentrations of fecal bacteria during heavy rain. Several streams have outlets 200 meters, 550 meters, and 1,050 meters south of the beach, and 950 meters north of the beach, which may contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria during certain periods. Risk of sudden pollution from accidents involving recreational boats, slurry tanks, or sewage lines. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up at the water's edge. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills. Glass shards and litter can occur at the beach.
