Ørby Strand

Ørby Strand is a small natural beach located 1.5 km northeast of Ørby in an open green landscape. The beach is 180 metres long and 5 to 10 metres wide, consisting primarily of fine sand with small stones along the shoreline and larger stones forming breakwaters. The beach features a large bathing pier, benches, and a pleasant atmosphere. Water quality is classified as excellent based on routine monitoring of faecal indicator bacteria.

Water

Lillebælt (Little Belt) is classified as brackish water. The seabed consists primarily of fine sand with small to medium-sized stones distributed evenly across the bottom. Water depth remains shallow, rising gradually from the shore, with depths under 2 metres extending approximately 850 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable with no dominant flow direction.

Location

Ørby Strand is located northeast of a small holiday home area on Lillebælt, 1.5 km from Ørby. The beach is accessible via Jørlhagevej, which leads to a car park at the beach.

Facilities

Bathing pier, benches along the beach, car park, rubbish bins at the car park.

Season

Routine monitoring is conducted during the bathing season. Annual classification review occurs in May before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria during the bathing season. Monitoring data from 2012–2015 formed the basis for this classification, which is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

A rainwater discharge pipe is located just north of the bathing pier and poses risk of faecal bacterial contamination during rainy weather; bathing is discouraged at and near this outlet. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom is low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom is low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up exists; bathing near large accumulations of seaweed is discouraged as it can harbour bacteria and produce toxic substances. Glass shards and litter may occasionally occur. Risk of chemical contamination is very low.
