The Semois bathing area at Chiny (H07) is a river bathing zone located in the Semois-Chiers hydrographic sub-basin, part of the International Meuse River District. The beach stretches for 56.5 metres with an average river width of 40 metres and depths ranging from 0.7 to 1.3 metres. The riverbed is characterised by rocks, mud, and pebbles. Water quality has been classified as good since 2015, though the zone experienced non-compliant status six times between 2002 and 2012 due to occasional faecal contamination.

Chiny, Belgium. The bathing zone is located in the upstream water masses SC23R (Semois II) and SC28R (Semois III).

Water Quality

Water quality classification: good (since 2015). The zone was non-compliant on six occasions between 2002 and 2012 due to faecal contamination. Primary contamination source identified as human origin. Additional contamination sources include livestock and environmental sources (soil, sediments). Faecal bacteria concentrations increase significantly during rainfall events exceeding 10 mm within 24 hours preceding sampling. A strong correlation exists between river discharge rate and zone contamination.

Risks

Faecal contamination, particularly during rainfall events. Identified pollution sources include livestock access to watercourse, tourist establishments (campings), wastewater discharge outlets, sewage treatment station outfalls, and storm water overflows. Most significant contamination occurs during heavy precipitation events.
