Lake Neufchâteau is a designated bathing water zone located in the Semois-Chiers hydrographic sub-basin at an altitude of 425 metres. The lake covers 4.14 hectares with a beach length of 57 metres and water depths ranging from 0.20 to 3 metres. The lake bed is homogeneous, composed of sand and silt. The bathing zone has experienced recurring contamination problems and has been closed for many years, meeting compliance standards only twice in the past 20 years (in 2005 and 2008).

Water Quality

Bathing zone classified as non-compliant for much of the monitoring period. Fecal bacteria contamination from both human and bovine sources exceeds 1,000 CFU/100 ml, particularly during rainfall events. Contamination concentrations exceed thresholds throughout the Neufchâteau stream course during rain episodes. Primary sources include wastewater discharge, storm overflow surges, and livestock access to watercourses.

Risks

Recurring fecal bacterial contamination from human and bovine origins. Storm overflow surges at multiple points (Neufchâteau at 1.4 km, Chaumô at 3.5 km, Longlier at 4.7 km). Livestock direct access to the stream, particularly at stream sources which are rarely fenced. Runoff from agricultural pastures. Higher risk during high flow conditions and lower temperatures; risk decreases during low flow and elevated temperatures above 20°C.
