Laguna Santos Morcillo is a karstic limestone lagoon located in Ossa de Montiel, Castilla la Mancha, Spain. It is part of the Ruidera Lagoon system, a series of lagoons arranged at different heights and separated by natural travertine barriers. The lagoon is fed by a combination of surface water overflow from the higher lagoons and groundwater from the Campo de Montiel aquifer. The water body has a maximum depth of approximately 15 meters and a width of around 275 meters at the measured profile.

Water

Natural karstic limestone lagoon with permanent water. The lagoon measures approximately 275 meters in width with a maximum depth of 15 meters. The lake bed contains aquatic plants, exposed substrate, and fine sands. The beach consists of exposed limestone soil with sparse herbaceous vegetation. Water originates from both surface overflow from higher lagoons and groundwater discharge from the Campo de Montiel aquifer.

Location

The lagoon is situated southeast of Ruidera in Ossa de Montiel municipality, Albacete province. Access is via the CR-650 road from Ruidera towards Ossa de Montiel, turning right after the Albergue Juvenil Alonso Quijano. A dedicated access road leads directly to the bathing area. Parking is available at the site.

Risks

A fenced area exists due to a ground subsidence incident in 2015. During summer months and prolonged dry periods, water inputs decrease significantly, causing general water level decline. Some lagoons in the system, particularly Redondilla and Lengua, are more severely affected by prolonged drought.
