Laourou is a bathing water area located in the Laourou bay in the Paphos district of Cyprus. It comprises two sandy beaches separated by an artificial marina, with the western beach being more frequently visited. The area has been awarded the Blue Flag designation. The beaches feature sandy substrates with sandstone bedrock appearing in various locations, and the eastern beach shows pebbles mixed with sand and seaweed accumulation.

Water

Marine bathing water in the North Paphos coastal body. The beach extends 625 metres (385 metres western section, 240 metres eastern section). Mean water depth is 2.5 metres with maximum depth of 5 metres. The area is situated within hydrological basin 1, with mean annual precipitation of 551 millimetres in the catchment area and mean elevation of 465.1 metres.

Location

Laourou bay, Paphos district, within the Pegeia municipality. The monitoring point is located in the eastern section of the beach at coordinates 32.3585°E, 34.8582°N (ETRS89). The beach is managed as a private concession under municipal oversight.

Facilities

Lifeguard services with rescue equipment are available from 11:00 to 17:30 during the swimming season. Garbage collection bins are present along the beach length. Toilets are available at hotel and food service facilities. Large numbers of umbrellas and loungers are available at the western beach. No public facilities for public use. No suitable disabled access. Beach cleaning is performed manually and mechanically by the private concessionaire.

Season

Lifeguard services operate from 11:00 to 17:30 during the designated swimming season. Monitoring data and management measures are implemented seasonally.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data conducted since Cyprus's accession to the European Union in 2004. The coastal body is in good ecological condition. Monitoring has been carried out for many years according to Directive 76/160/EEC. The bathing water area presents a moderate risk for macroalgae and phytoplankton development based on identified pollution sources.

Risks

Two streams (Pappara and Katsiri) discharge into the western beach, passing through the Pegeia settlement which lacks a sewerage network. A possible pollution source is the recreational boat shelter located between the eastern and western beaches. Seaweed accumulation (Posidonia) is more concentrated in the western beach. Moderate risk for macroalgae and phytoplankton development. Short-term pollution risk is low, with one recorded incident between 2008 and 2010 (29 July 2008), primarily from potential malfunction of sewerage systems in coastal developments.
