The Marlette bathing zone at Seneffe (E05) is a freshwater bathing area located in the Senne sub-basin at an altitude of 126 metres. The beach measures 50 metres in length with a water surface area of 2.7 hectares. Water depth ranges from 0.80 to 2.2 metres, with a bottom composed primarily of pebbles and mud. The zone was officially designated as a bathing area on 27 May 2004. After presenting contamination problems that led to closure from 2009 to 2013, the zone returned to compliance in 2014 and currently presents good water quality.

Freshwater swimming zone with a surface area of 2.7 hectares. Water depth ranges from a minimum of 0.80 metres to a maximum of 2.2 metres. The bottom is composed of a homogeneous layer of pebbles and mud. The beach is 50 metres in length.

Location

Seneffe, located within the Senne sub-basin in the International Scheldt River District. The zone is situated within water bodies SN12R (Samme), SN02C (former Charleroi-Brussels canal), and SA01B (watershed section).

Water Quality

Water quality classification: good since 2014. Previously insufficient quality from 2009 to 2013, with compliance achieved from 2000 to 2008 under the former directive. Bacterial contamination sources identified during sampling campaigns in 2013 and 2016 include discharges from an unnamed stream and the Godarville wastewater treatment plant. E. coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations are monitored. Significant contamination peaks occur during rainfall events.

Risks

Bacterial contamination from multiple sources: discharges from an unnamed tributary stream, livestock access to the watercourse, overflow from a pumping station, and discharge from the Godarville wastewater treatment plant (3,000 person-equivalent capacity). Elevated contamination occurs during rainfall events due to significant overflow of water laden with faecal bacteria. A pleasure port with 60-80 boats poses an undetermined impact from black water discharge.
