Lido Arona

Italy Lake 2 - Good

Lido Arona is a public bathing beach on Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region near the town of Arona. The beach features a pebbly shoreline approximately 208 metres wide and is equipped with showers, toilets, a bar, and a beach volleyball court. The water is classified as good quality based on monitoring data from 2021–2024. Dogs are permitted on the beach if kept on a lead.

Water classification: Good. Based on 22 routine samples collected during 2021–2024. Escherichia coli 90th percentile 307.2 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile 559.0 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci 90th percentile 176.3 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile 303.4 MPN/100 ml. Wastewater treatment plant located approximately 2 km from the monitoring zone. An overflow structure is present 200 metres away.

Risks

High pressure classification due to elevated density of sewage conduits and Class IV treatment plants. Torrente Vevera stream discharges into the lake near the bathing area and may introduce contaminants. Overflow structure located 200 metres away. Intense rainfall can trigger overflow structures; accidental failures of pumping systems can discharge untreated effluent into the lake. Poor sewage network management is a potential pollution source. Cyanobacterial proliferation potential is low; 15 cyanobacterial samples analysed over four years with none exceeding 20,000 cells/ml. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or harmful species proliferation detected in the past four years.
