Lundeborg Strand is a sandy beach stretching from the small harbor town of Lundeborg northward for over 500 meters toward Purreskoven forest. The beach features fine sand with occasional small stones and is characterized by shallow water less than 2 meters deep within 100 meters of shore, making it very child-friendly. The beach is sheltered by hilly terrain behind it and includes a bathing platform. A harbor area to the south offers facilities, dining, and a pleasant environment.

Water

The water is classified as saltwater in the South Funen Archipelago (Det Sydfynske Øhav). Water depth is less than 2 meters approximately 100 meters from shore. Beach width ranges from 10 to 30 meters, with beach length exceeding 500 meters. The seafloor consists of sand with occasional small stones. Tidal range is minimal (under 0.5 meters). Current direction is variable depending on wind conditions but primarily from the south.

Location

The beach is accessed via Havnevej in Hesselager (nearest address: Havnevej 4A, 5874 Hesselager), which ends at a parking lot with direct beach access. Two camping sites are located adjacent to the beach. Bus service is available. Parking is provided.

Facilities

Lifeguard presence is not mentioned. Blue Flag designation indicates compliance with water quality, safety, information, environment, and facility criteria. Available facilities include: parking, toilet (including handicapped toilet), bus access, kiosk and restaurant, mobile phone coverage, bathing platform, first aid kit in toilet building, rescue rings, drinking water, waste bins, and waste sorting facilities. Dogs are not permitted on the beach but may pass through on a leash in the rear area.

Water Quality

Lundeborg Strand is classified as Excellent quality based on control samples from the last four years. Routine control samples are taken during the bathing season (1 June to 15 September) and analyzed for E. coli and Enterococcus bacteria. The classification is reviewed annually before the start of the bathing season. Results and further information are available on Svendborg Municipality's website at www.svendborg.dk/badevand.

Risks

Tange Å stream 150 meters north of the beach is a possible source of short-term fecal contamination; bathing near its outlet is not recommended. A stormwater pipe at the southern end of the beach poses similar risk; bathing near it is not recommended. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms is assessed as low but can occur during prolonged warm periods with high nutrient levels. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up in the water's edge exists; bathing or children playing near large accumulations of seaweed is not recommended due to potential toxin formation and disease-causing bacteria. Glass shards, litter, and chemical contamination including oil spills can occur. Both camping sites and Lundeborg use separate sewer systems, eliminating risk of sewage overflow.
