A public access pebble beach located in Lesa on Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region of Italy. The beach spans 139 metres and is classified as good quality water based on routine monitoring samples from 2020–2023. The area is characterized by moderate-to-high pressure from wastewater infrastructure, though no proliferation of cyanobacteria, macroalgae, or harmful phytoplankton has been detected.

Location

Lesa, Province of Novara, Piedmont region, Italy. The beach is at an elevation of 210 metres above sea level. The responsible authority is the Municipality of Lesa (Via Portici 2, telephone 0322 76421).

Classification: Good. Based on 18 routine samples collected between 2020 and 2023. Escherichia coli: 90th percentile 34.8 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile 54.5 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci: 90th percentile 158.3 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile 258.4 MPN/100 ml. A wastewater treatment facility is present within 1 kilometre of the sampling point. The water body experiences medium-to-high pressure from a high density of sewer pipes in the surrounding area.

Risks

Intense precipitation can trigger overflow structures, and accidental failures of pumping systems can introduce untreated sewage into the lake. Inadequate management of the sewerage network has been identified as a potential source of pollution.
