Magleby Skov

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Magleby Skov is an 800-metre-long beach consisting of fine sand mixed with small and medium-sized stones, located in scenic surroundings with forest on all sides. The beach is 10 metres wide and oriented east-west, facing the waters between Faxe Bay and Køge Bay. The area features a bonfire spot and ample space for recreation in natural surroundings.

Water

Brackish water in Køge Bay and Faxe Bay with variable current direction, primarily from west and east. Water depth is under 2 metres approximately 600 metres from the shore and increases gradually. The beach is protected by concrete elements near the waterline.

Location

Magleby, near Strøby Ladeplads, east of Køge Bay. A parking area is available at the beach.

Season

1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality for 2022 based on monitoring data from 2018–2021. Water is monitored routinely during the bathing season (1 June to 1 September) for faecal indicator bacteria: E. coli and enterococci. Under normal conditions and during dry weather, there is no known health risk associated with bathing at the beach within the defined bathing area.

Risks

Kilderenden stream, located 650 metres east of the beach, has high faecal bacterial concentrations due to septic tank discharge from 10–15 properties and represents a potential pollution source. A pumping station in Magleby has an overflow to Kilderenden with risk of discharging wastewater during heavy rain. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washup at the waterline. Glass shards and litter may occur. Very low risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills. Sudden contamination from accidents involving pleasure boats, manure tanks, and sewage pipes is possible.
