Maglehøj Strand

Maglehøj Strand is a 300-metre-long family-friendly beach located along Femern Belt in naturally beautiful surroundings near Lolland's coastal embankment. The beach consists of fine sand with small to medium-sized stones at the water's edge, backed by a large green area suitable for sunbathing and play. It has good access for wheelchair users and prams, making it an accessible bathing destination.

Water

Femern Belt, classified as brackish water. The water depth increases gradually from the shore, remaining under 2 metres at a distance of 50–100 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable, primarily from west or east.

Location

The beach is located along Femern Belt near a small holiday home area. Access is via Maglehøjvej, which leads to a parking area where toilet facilities are available.

Facilities

Toilet facilities, parking, trash bins, wheelchair accessible facilities, first aid equipment, rescue ring, blue flag, and warning signs for degraded water quality.

Season

Routine water quality monitoring is conducted during the bathing water season. Classification is reviewed annually before the season begins.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality for 2022 based on routine monitoring during the 2018–2021 bathing seasons. Water is tested for indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci. Under normal circumstances, there is no health risk associated with bathing.

Risks

A sewage overflow located 1,400 metres east of the beach poses a risk of temporary contamination during heavy rainfall, lasting up to 72 hours. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms, which occur during prolonged periods of warm, nutrient-rich water. Macroalgae (seaweed) washing ashore is a known occurrence; the beach is cleaned every three weeks. Glass shards and litter can occur. Risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills is very low.
