Næsby Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Næsby Strand is a 500-metre-long beach with fine sand, small and medium-sized stones at the water's edge, and a sandy seabed with scattered stones. The beach is backed by a large green area offering numerous recreational opportunities. The beach has achieved excellent water quality classification based on routine monitoring of indicator bacteria during the bathing season.

Water

Femern Belt, classified as brackish water. The beach is 500 metres long and 10–20 metres wide. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, reaching under 2 metres at 50–100 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable with no dominant flow direction.

Location

Næsby, Denmark. The beach is accessed via Rolandsvej, which ends at a parking area at the eastern end of the beach. The beach is located along Lolland Dike in a summer house area facing Femern Belt.

Facilities

Parking area, rubbish bins, rescue ring buoys, warning signs for reduced water quality. Lifeguards, toilets, showers, and disabled access are not mentioned.

Season

Bathing season runs during the period when routine water quality monitoring is conducted. Water quality classification is revised annually in May before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2022: Excellent. Classification is based on routine control samples taken during the bathing season 2018–2021, analysed for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria. No concentrations of faecal bacteria have been measured in the past five years that pose a health risk to swimmers.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms, though the risk is low. Macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up risk at the water's edge. Rainwater outfalls exist at the eastern end and 900 metres west of the beach, and a culverted stream outlet 200 metres west of the beach boundary may contain high faecal bacteria concentrations during rainfall. Glass shards and litter can occur. Risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills is very low.
