Senhor da Pedra is an urban beach located in Vila Nova de Gaia with both sandy and rocky morphology. The beach features an extensive strip of sand and is situated along the Douro River. It is monitored for bathing water quality under Portuguese regulations and sampled every three weeks during the official bathing season.

Bathing season 2025: June 14 to September 14. Sampling frequency: every 3 weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). In the 2024 bathing season, no days were recorded on which bathing was advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution events. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the local sanitation network and the Espírito Santo tributary.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface flow from the drainage network and tributaries during heavy rainfall, leading to microbiological load entrainment. Pollution may also occur due to malfunctions in the wastewater lifting station. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of bloom occurrence. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential are both low with no history of occurrence.
