Francemar is an urban beach located in Vila Nova de Gaia within the Douro River basin. The beach features an extensive sand strip bordered by a line of dunes. It is monitored for bathing water quality according to Portuguese legislation.

June 14th to September 14th, 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Monitoring frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution events were recorded in the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution events are unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow from the tributary (ribeira de Canelas) during rainfall, causing microbiological contamination, or from discharge of untreated effluents in case of malfunction of the wastewater pumping station. Potential faecal contamination may originate from the local sewerage network or the tributary. Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no historical occurrence.
