Monument Leclerc beach is located on the eastern coast of the Cotentin peninsula in the commune of Saint-Martin-de-Varreville, Manche department, Basse-Normandie region. The beach extends along the entire coastline of the commune. The bathing zone monitoring point is situated facing the Monument Leclerc landmark. The beach is characterized by sandy terrain with tidal influences typical of the English Channel coast.

Water

English Channel coastal water body with tidal and current influences. The site is subject to maritime tidal movements and wind-driven currents typical of the Normandy coast.

Location

Saint-Martin-de-Varreville, Manche department (50), Basse-Normandie region. Located on the eastern coast of the Cotentin peninsula, bordered by communes of Saint-Germain-de-Varreville and Audouville-la-Hubert. Parking and beach access points are available near the monitoring location.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted under European Directive 2006/7/CE. Historical monitoring data available under previous Directive 76/160/CEE. Faecal contamination indicators monitored. Water quality classifications simulated under new directive provisions with target of achieving sufficient quality status by 2015.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified including domestic wastewater from collective and non-collective sanitation systems, stormwater runoff, agricultural activities, coastal discharges, camping and mobile home areas, and horse circulation on the beach.
