Nautical Club of Larnaca is a sandy beach mixed with small to medium-sized pebbles located in the northeastern part of Larnaca Bay. The beach is 455 metres long with an average water depth of 1 metre and a maximum depth of 2 metres. The southern section contains facilities of the nautical club and a petrol station, while a coastal road runs along the inland edge. The water quality has been characterized as excellent based on long-term monitoring data.

Water

Northeastern Larnaca Bay. The shoreline is a semi-natural intertidal zone with a sandy bottom mixed with pebbles. Average water depth is 1 metre and maximum depth is 2 metres. Beach length is 455 metres.

Location

Located in Larnaca district, Cyprus, administered by Larnaca Municipality. The monitoring point is positioned at coordinates 33.6513°E, 34.9529°N near the area of highest bather density close to a tourist kiosk. The Larnaca port is approximately 3 kilometres to the southwest.

Facilities

Private facilities exist only within the Nautical Club premises. No public facilities for serving the general public are available. The Larnaca Municipality is responsible for waste collection.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent based on monitoring data from 2004 onwards following Cyprus's accession to the European Union. An isolated pollution incident was recorded during the 2007 bathing season attributed to a high number of bathers. No short-term pollution incidents were recorded during the 2008-2010 bathing seasons. The coastal body of water is in good ecological status.

Risks

Moderate risk of development of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication exists based on identified pollution sources. Small risk of short-term pollution events from stormwater runoff, high-traffic facilities in neighbouring areas, and passing ships. Potential pollution sources include agricultural and livestock runoff and infiltration, stormwater runoff from coastal developments, and septic tanks from residential areas upstream where no sewer network exists. A petroleum storage facility is located 200 metres southwest of the bathing water.
