Nr. Lyngby Strand is a coastal beach in a small community that developed from a former fishing village. The beach is approximately 75 meters wide at its widest point and 700 meters long, consisting of fine sand with small stones and larger stones along the access road and breakwaters. The water in Skagerrak is classified as saltwater with primary current direction from the southwest. Water depth under 2 meters extends approximately 200 meters from the shore.

Location

Nr. Lyngby is a coastal town in Hjørring Municipality, Denmark. The beach is accessible from the town via steep cliff paths. The municipality is responsible for the bathing area and can be contacted at Springvandspladsen 5, 9800 Hjørring, or by telephone at 72 33 33 33.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as Excellent quality based on routine monitoring between 2011–2014. E. coli and enterococcus bacteria concentrations are measured as indicators of fecal contamination. Excellent quality requires enterococcus levels below 100 per 100 ml and E. coli below 250 per 100 ml. The classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is assessed as low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is assessed as low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation in the waterline is assessed as low. Sudden depth changes can occur near the shore following sandbar breakthroughs. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. The Nr. Lyngby treatment plant discharge is located 2–300 meters out from Kodalrenden and does not affect bathing water quality within the demarcated beach area.
