Lønstrup Strand comprises two beach areas—Nord and Syd—separated by the outlet of Lønstrup Bæk. The northern beach is approximately 60 metres wide and 250 metres long, while the southern beach is approximately 60 metres wide and 200 metres long. Both beaches consist of coarse-grained sand with small to medium stones, backed by planted dunes on the north beach. The beaches feature groynes and wave breakers constructed from large stone.

Water

Saltwater in Skagerrak. Water depth under 2 metres extends approximately 350 metres from shore. Primary current direction is from the southwest. Seabed consists of fine sand with small stones.

Location

Lønstrup is an old fishing village situated directly adjacent to the beaches, with a permanent population of 553 but increasing to approximately 10,000 visitors during summer. The town is located in Hjørring Municipality, Denmark. Bathhouses are positioned along the northern beach.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent. Based on routine samples collected during the bathing season 2011–2014, analysed for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria. Excellent classification requires E. coli ≤250 per 100 ml and enterococci ≤100 per 100 ml (assessed at 95th percentile). Classification is revised annually before the start of the bathing season.

Risks

Lønstrup Bæk discharges between the two beach sections and periodically contains high concentrations of faecal bacteria; swimming is discouraged at and around the stream outlet. Risk of cyanobacteria bloom is low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom is low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) washup is low. Sudden contamination from ship accidents, manure tanker spills, or sewer line failures is possible. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
