Smørmosen is a sandy beach located on the east coast of Thurø island in southern Funen, Denmark. The beach stretches 250 metres and features fine sand with occasional small stones, backed by green areas with facilities including mini-golf, playground, and ice cream stand. The beach is naturally beautiful with forest to the north and south, and swimming primarily occurs at Smørmosen near Thurø Camping. A bathing platform is installed during the swimming season. The beach is designated with the Blue Flag environmental certification.

Water

Saltwater in the South Funen archipelago. Water depth less than 2 metres for approximately 100 metres from shore. Seabed consists of sand with few stones. Current direction is variable depending on wind conditions but primarily from the south. Tidal range is less than 0.5 metres.

Location

Nearest address: Gyldenstensvej 10, 5700 Svendborg, Denmark. The beach is easily reached from the car park at Smørmose Skov. Additional access via car parks at Østerskov and at the end of Østerskovvej for Thurø Rev. Parking is available.

Blue Flag certification. Bathing platform. Parking. Toilets. Bus access. Kiosk and restaurant. Mobile coverage across entire beach. Life rings for emergency use. First aid kit in kiosk. Drinking water. Waste bins. Waste sorting. Mini-golf, playground, ice cream stand, changing facilities in green area behind beach. Dogs are not permitted on the beach.

Season

Official monitoring season: 1 June to 15 September. Bathing platform is installed during the swimming season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine control samples from the last four years analysing for E. coli and Enterococcus bacteria. Monitoring occurs during the bathing season from 1 June to 15 September. Annual reanalysis and reclassification occurs before the start of each bathing season.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up, especially at the northern end of the beach; bathing is discouraged near large quantities of rotting seaweed due to potential toxins and bacteria. Low risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms based on monitoring data, though these can occur suddenly during prolonged warm periods with high nutrient content. Skårupøre Sund to the north has tributaries, overflow structures and treatment plant, but discharge is diluted before reaching the beach. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur. Sudden contamination from boat accidents, slurry tanks or sewage lines is possible.
