Oreby Havn

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Oreby Havn is a bathing beach located at the entrance to Sakskøbing Fjord on North Lolland. The beach is stony with some sand and reeds, approximately 150 metres long and very narrow. Water depth is less than 1 metre for approximately 80 metres from the shore. The beach is part of the Tårs Vig wildlife reserve, with Oreby Castle visible from the harbour to the north.

Water

Brackish water body. Water temperature in the bathing season ranges from 13–26 °C. Water currents predominantly move toward the southeast (29% of measurements) and west-northwest (17% of measurements).

Location

Access is via Orebyvej to Oreby harbour on North Lolland. Several parking options are available at the harbour. No public transport is available to the beach.

Facilities

Bathing bridge. A large green area with a small harbour is present at the beach.

Season

Official monitoring period is 1 May to 1 September, with at least 6 samples collected to monitor water quality.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent according to Danish regulation no. 939 of 18 September 2012. Classification is based on data from 2011–2014. Only isolated breaches of bathing water quality requirements occurred during this period. The beach is not subject to significant faecal pollution.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms can occur, especially during prolonged warm and sunny weather with easterly winds. Algae produce toxic substances that can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation can occur at the water's edge; bathing is not recommended near seaweed. Glass shards, litter, oil spills, and other chemical pollution can occasionally occur. Sudden contamination can arise from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tankers, and sewer pipes.
