Vedbæk Sydstrand is a natural sandy beach located immediately south of Vedbæk Harbour on the Øresund strait. The beach is 225 metres long and up to 100 metres wide, featuring sand, small dunes, and coastal vegetation. Water quality is classified as excellent based on data from 2020–2023. The beach has shallow water near the shore with sandy bottom and smaller stones, and experiences weak coastal currents.

Water

Øresund strait. Saltwater. Beach length 225 metres, width up to 100 metres. Sandy bottom with smaller stones. Shallow water near shore. Coastal currents generally weak and wind-dependent. Bottom conditions change seasonally with sandbar migration.

Location

Located immediately south of Vedbæk Harbour in Rudersdal Municipality, Denmark. Parking, public toilets, cafés and restaurants are available at the harbour.

Season

Bathing water samples are taken at least 6 times during the bathing season in 2024. Algae growth is monitored during the bathing season and warning signs are posted if health risks are identified.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent (based on 2020–2023 data). Monitoring conducted by Rudersdal Municipality according to EU Bathing Water Directive requirements. Potential pollution sources include two storm water outlets (J15-UDL and J06-UDL) that discharge during rainfall, treated wastewater discharge from Vedbæk Treatment Plant (J14-UDL) located approximately 300 metres from shore and 400 metres north of the beach, and several overflow points from combined sewers in the catchment area. Overflow events are infrequent and pollution typically lasts a maximum of 3 days after heavy rainfall.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) on the beach. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms occur rarely in the Øresund area but can produce toxins causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Glass shards, litter and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur.
