Østerstrand – Fredericia Dame Roklub is a bathing beach located in the southern part of Fredericia city centre, oriented eastward toward Lillebælt. The beach stretches approximately 3 kilometres and features a shallow sandy beach about 50 metres long and 20 metres wide with occasional stone breakwaters. The area is primarily used for rowing and kayaking. A coastal path runs along the entire beach and serves as an important connection between the northern district and the city centre.

Water

Lillebælt (Little Belt strait). Water depth is approximately 2 metres up to 100 metres from the shore. Fine sand bottom with occasional stones. Salinity: 20–22 ‰. Current direction is primarily determined by wind direction; the northward current has greater force than the southward current year-round.

Location

Southern Fredericia city centre, accessible from Øster Voldgade or via Strandstien (the coastal path). The beach is located at the Fredericia Dame Roklub rowing club facility.

Facilities

Fire pit area, tables and benches, kayak and rowing club boat launching piers. Dogs must be kept on a leash from 1 April to 30 September.

Season

Bathing season monitoring and classification review occurs annually before the bathing season starts. Algae and cyanobacteria monitoring is conducted during the bathing season in the northern Lillebælt area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: 'Excellent', the highest classification for a bathing site, based on the last 4 years of analysis. Water quality is monitored 5 times during the bathing season with results published on the municipality website. Risk of faecal pollution is assessed as low. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is generally low but can occur in summer periods with prolonged heat. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) in the beach zone is low in summer. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low.

Risks

Risk of weever fish in summer months; stepping on its venomous spines causes pain and requires treatment with a hot foot bath (40–45°C for 30–60 minutes). Risk of jellyfish (sea nettles) in summer, particularly in July and August; stinging tentacles can float metres away from the jellyfish body. Seaweed decomposition can produce toxins and harbour pathogenic bacteria. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Glass shards, waste and other discarded objects, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur at the beach.
