Pietralacroce is a bathing beach in Ancona, Marche region, protected by natural limestone submerged cliffs and natural rocky barriers. The beach is steep with a distance of 1 metre between average low and high water marks. The surrounding area consists of low Mediterranean scrubland. The beach extends 690 metres in length and 10 metres in width.

Marine bathing water (Ancona_Numana water body). Beach area: 0.50438 hectares. Distance between average low and high water marks: 1 metre. Astronomical tide range: 30–50 centimetres.

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. Located in a Regional Park area with scattered houses nearby.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serves approximately 90,565 population equivalent from urban settlements, with capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day. Monthly monitoring of Escherichia coli at the treatment plant in 2010 showed values ranging from below the detection limit to 3,100 CFU/100 ml. All monitoring results were compliant with AIA authorization limits 81/VAA_08 of 10 August 2007.

Risks

Animals are not permitted on the beach. No pollution sources have been identified as affecting bathing water quality. Toxic algae bloom (Ostreopsis ovata) occurred in September 2008, resulting in death of benthic organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels) with no effects on humans. In 2007, 2009, and 2010, no algal blooms typical of the coastline were recorded. Phytoplankton proliferation has been documented.
