Pietralacroce (Case Verde) is an artificial beach with rock barriers and natural cliff protection located in Ancona, Marche region. The beach is steep with a mean tidal range of 30–50 cm and a distance of 1 m between mean low water and the safe bathing limit. The surrounding area consists of low Mediterranean scrubland and urban settlements.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The beach extends 550 m in length and 10 m in width.

Water Quality

Classification: Category C (as of profile date). Water quality classification: E. The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serves approximately 90,565 population equivalents from urban settlements plus approximately 3,290 from industrial activities, with capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day. Monthly monitoring during 2010 by ARPA Marche showed varying E. coli levels, ranging from below detection limit to 3,100 CFU/100 ml in July 2010.

Risks

Wastewater discharge occurs via the Conocchio ditch into the sea near the Tourist Port of Ancona. Overflow discharge points exist along the beach when threshold levels are exceeded. Phytoplankton proliferation recorded: toxic alga Ostreopsis ovata bloom in September 2008 caused mortality of benthic sessile organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels). Years 2007, 2009, and 2010 were characterised by absence of typical algal blooms.
