Sedia del Papa is a beach in Ancona with natural limestone rock barriers. The beach is steep with a distance of 1 metre between medium-low water and high water (safe water limit). Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements. The beach is 450 metres long and 10 metres wide.

Coastal marine water body designated Ancona_Numana. Beach with natural limestone rock barriers, steep gradient. Tidal range 30–50 centimetres.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. Located along the coastline between Esino and Musone. Access to dogs is permitted from 1 October to 30 April year-round for guide dogs and rescue dogs.

Water Quality

Classification Excellent in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. 2015: E. coli 95th percentile 11.1 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 4.5 CFU/100ml. 2016: E. coli 95th percentile 8.2 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 3.7 CFU/100ml. 2017: E. coli 95th percentile 18.8 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 4.2 CFU/100ml. 2018: E. coli 95th percentile 24.2 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 6.2 CFU/100ml. Wastewater treatment: Ancona municipal sewerage network serves the entire urbanized territory through two treatment plants with biological BNR systems and anaerobic digestion. The Zipa treatment plant serves this bathing area with capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 population equivalents, serving approximately 90,565 residents. No sources of pollution identified that can affect bathing water quality.

Risks

Precautionary closure to bathing due to toxic algae bloom Ostreopsis ovata in September. Presence of non-stinging jellyfish Cotylorhiza tubercolata and stinging jellyfish Charybdea. Death of benthic sessile organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels) reported.
