Water

Marine coastal water body. Beach length: 400 metres; beach width: 10 metres. Steep gradient with 1 metre distance between mean low water and safe water limit. Astronomical tidal range: 30–50 centimetres. Natural rocky barriers and submerged limestone cliffs provide protection.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The water body is part of the Ancona_Numana body of water, situated in the Litorale tra Esino e Musone drainage basin.

Water Quality

Classification E. Water quality monitoring shows Escherichia coli results from 2010: January 90 CFU/100ml, February below detection limit, March 23 CFU/100ml, April 400 CFU/100ml, May below detection limit, June 24 CFU/100ml, July 3100 CFU/100ml, August 120 CFU/100ml, September below detection limit, October 20 CFU/100ml, November below detection limit, December 80 CFU/100ml. The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serves the area with a capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 population equivalents. Treated effluent is discharged into the Conocchio drainage ditch, which flows directly to sea in the Tourist Port area. Monthly controls in 2010 by ARPAM consistently complied with authorised limits.

Risks

Natural clear water drainage channels present. Toxic algal bloom (Ostreopsis ovata) recorded in September 2008 with associated benthic organism mortality (limpets, sea urchins, mussels). Phytoplankton proliferation potential identified. No algal blooms recorded in 2007, 2009, and 2010.
