Passetto Ascensori is an artificial beach in Ancona with groynes and rocky barriers, protected by artificial submerged reefs. The beach has a steep slope with an 8-metre distance between medium-low and high water marks, and astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements.

Adriatic Sea coastal bathing water (Ancona_Numana body). Beach area extends 0.42928 hectares. Tidal range: 30–50 centimetres.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The beach is 240 metres long and 20 metres wide.

Facilities

Hygiene facilities including disabled access; first aid station; restaurant; bar; beach establishments; elevator service with ramp connecting elevator to shoreline; disabled access ramp for water entry. Animals not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poor). The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serves approximately 90,565 residents and 3,290 industrial activity equivalents. Monthly monitoring in 2010 showed E. coli levels ranging from below detection limit to 3,100 CFU/100 ml (July 2010). The treatment plant operates with mixed sewerage system and discharges treated effluent through the Conocchio stream directly to sea. Combined sewer overflows discharge along the beach when threshold capacity is exceeded.

Risks

Toxic algal blooms of Ostreopsis ovata recorded: September 2008; late August to mid-September 2009; late August 2010. Effects on aquatic organisms documented: mortality of sessile benthic organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels). No effects on humans reported.
