Pietralacroce (Casa Grigia) is a beach in Ancona with natural rocky barriers and protected by submerged limestone cliffs. The beach slopes steeply, with approximately 1 metre distance between mean low water and the limit of safe waters. Tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of low Mediterranean scrubland.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The competent authority is the Harbour Master's Office (Capitaneria Di Porto) at Scalo Molo Nord, 60121 Ancona, telephone 071 502101.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poorest category). Monthly monitoring in 2010 of Escherichia coli from the Zipa wastewater treatment plant discharge showed results ranging from below detection limit to 3100 CFU/100 ml. The Zipa treatment plant serves approximately 90,565 inhabitants equivalent from urban areas and approximately 3,290 equivalent inhabitants from industrial activities, with a capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day. Combined sewers convey wastewater to two biological treatment plants (Vallechiara and Zipa) during normal conditions.

Risks

Combined sewer overflows can occur during heavy rainfall events, with discharge outlets located along the beach. In 2008, a toxic algal bloom (Ostreopsis ovata) occurred in September, causing mortality of sessile benthic organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels). No human health effects were reported.
