Serie Casette Grigie is a bathing beach in Ancona protected by natural submerged limestone cliffs and natural rock barriers. The beach is steep with a distance of 1 metre between average low water and high water (safe water limit). The surrounding area consists of low Mediterranean scrubland. Tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. The beach extends 1200 metres in length and 10 metres in width.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. In the province of Ancona, within a regional park area with scattered houses.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (as of 2012). Category C bathing water. Monitoring conducted by ARPA Marche in 2010 showed monthly Escherichia coli measurements ranging from below detection limit to 3100 CFU/100 ml (July 2010). The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serves approximately 90,565 residents from urban settlements and 3,290 from productive activities, with capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 equivalent inhabitants. Sewage treatment plant monitoring results in 2010 consistently complied with authorized limits.

Risks

The Zipa wastewater treatment plant discharges via the Conocchio stream directly to sea near the Tourist Port of Ancona. Overflow discharge points exist along the beach when threshold levels are exceeded. In September 2008, toxic algal bloom of Ostreopsis ovata occurred causing deaths of benthic sessile organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels). No effects on humans were reported. In 2007, 2009 and 2010, typical algal blooms characteristic of the coastline were absent.
