Playa El Altillo is a 50-metre-long and 25-metre-wide coastal bathing beach located in Moya, Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has a northwest-exposed coastline with strong wave conditions and a sandy substrate with boulders. The water body has a depth range of 0 to -4 metres and a tidal range of 1-3 metres.

Location

Moya, Gran Canaria, Las Palmas province, Canary Islands, Spain. Good pedestrian and vehicular access. Good parking available. Regular disabled access.

Facilities

Public water fountain with drinking water available. Showers, foot-wash facilities, and bins provided. Telephone available. Lifeguards on duty. Medical care available. No changing facilities, services, or megaphone system. Bars available. No umbrella, tent, or lounger rental.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) evaluated over four years according to RD1341/2007. The coastal water body ES70GCTI1 is in good ecological status. Identified pollution sources include three small wastewater treatment plants (EBAR El Altillo), two auxiliary plants (EBAR La Barranquera), one urban wastewater treatment plant (EDAR El Pagador), one treatment plant (EDAR El Roque), one plant (EBAR San Andrés), one outfall, and one salt water filtration well for pools. No previous contamination episodes recorded.

Risks

Episodic contamination events of less than 72 hours duration from rainwater runoff carrying contaminants. Unforeseeable urban wastewater events (pipeline breaks, treatment network failures, emergency discharges, unauthorized spills) lasting less than 72 hours. Unforeseeable salt water discharge from pool drainage and filter cleaning lasting less than 24 hours. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
