Playa Bocabarranco is a coastal bathing beach located in Bañaderos, Arucas municipality, Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 140 meters long and 50 meters wide, with golden sand substrate and moderate wave exposure. It is situated on the northwest coast of Gran Canaria and is monitored during the official bathing season from June 1 to September 30. The underlying water mass is classified as being in good ecological state.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators assessed over four years according to RD1341/2007. Two short-duration microbiological contamination episodes recorded: June 12-13, 2018 and July 15-16, 2019. Underlying coastal water mass is in good ecological state (biological and physicochemical). Risks

Multiple point pollution sources identified: Bañaderos wastewater treatment plant (EDAR), submarine outfall, sewage treatment plant (EBAR) in Quintanilla, septic tank in Quintanilla, wastewater treatment plant (EDAS) for irrigation community Pozo Los Lentiscos, and brine discharge from EDAS. Short-duration contamination expected from rainfall runoff generating strong flows and raw or treated urban wastewater (line breaks, system failures, emergencies, unauthorized discharges). Cyanobacterial proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
