Playa El Ancla is a coastal bathing beach located in Teguise, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach measures 150 metres in length and 15 metres in width, with a substrate of white sand and rock. It is exposed to wave action but has calm waters overall, with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The bathing zone is classified as natural coastal surface water of the East Lanzarote water body, which maintains good ecological status.

Coastal marine water body, East Lanzarote (ES70LZTIV). Batimetry ranges from 0 to −1 metre. Wave regime: calm waters. Current regime: exposed to wave action. Tidal range: 1–3 metres. Substrate: white sand and rock.

Location

Teguise municipality, Lanzarote island, Las Palmas province, Canary Islands, Spain. The nearest locality is Costa Teguise. Parking is available with fewer than 50 spaces. Pedestrian access is easy; vehicular access is available.

Facilities

Pedestrian access (easy), vehicular access, parking (fewer than 50 spaces). No showers, no footwash, no changing rooms, no bars, no public water supply, no public telephone, no megaphone, no lifeguards, no medical attention, no doctor. Waste bins are available. Disabled access is not available.

Season

1 February to 30 November.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on four years of analytical results for faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, according to RD1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological (biological and physicochemical) status with an overall good or better state. Monitoring period: 1 February to 30 November.

Risks

Seven point pollution sources identified: three wastewater treatment plants (EBAR Ensenada de Las Caletas, EBAR Pretratamiento, EBAR Las Caletas), two hotel discharges (EDAM Hotel Be Live Lanzarote Resort (Oasis), EDAM Hotel Barceló), and two diesel power plants (Central Diésel Punta Grande 1 and 2, including thermal and industrial discharges). Contamination episodes occurred: 5–8 September 2011 (short-duration microbiological contamination) and 1–28 March 2011 (diffuse microbiological contamination). Potential short-duration contamination sources include: stormwater discharges from heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater from pipeline breaks or emergencies, and brine discharge (EDAM reject water). Fitoplancton proliferation episodes (cyanobacteria Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins.
