Playa Las Caletas is a coastal bathing area located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 400 meters long and 7 meters wide, with white sand, boulders, and rock substrate. It is exposed to waves and experiences calm waters with tidal ranges of 1–3 meters. The water body is classified as a natural coastal surface water mass of the eastern Lanzarote type (ES70LZTIV), which maintains good ecological status.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. The water mass ES70LZTIV is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical). No contamination episodes recorded in the Náyade system.

Risks

Multiple point discharge sources identified: Punta Grande Diesel Power Plant discharge (items 1–2), EDAM Lanzarote facilities (III, IV, V), EBAR Ensenada de Las Caletas, Submarine Emissary Harinas del Mar with spillway, DISA discharges, and additional EBAR facility. Potential short-duration contamination from stormwater runoff due to heavy rain and raw or treated urban wastewater (pipeline breaks, sewage network failure, emergency overflow). Sporadic cyanobacteria blooms (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
