Playa Bastián is a coastal bathing beach located in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 375 metres long and 15 metres wide, with white sand and rocky substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave action with a tidal range of 1 to 3 metres and depths ranging from 0 to 16 metres. The water body is classified as a natural coastal surface water mass in good ecological state.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) according to RD 1341/2007. The surface water body is in good ecological state with good or better overall status. Microbiological contamination occurred on 4-7 March 2013 due to persistent rainfall.

Risks

Possible contamination sources: EBAR Jablillo–El Pozo discharge, EBAR Playa Bastián discharge, EDAM Hotel Gran Teguise Playa, EDAR Las Caletas. Risk of stormwater runoff carrying contaminants from upstream. Risk of untreated or treated urban wastewater from pipeline breaks, sanitation network failures, or emergency overflow. Risk of brine discharge (EDAM rejection). Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
