Playa Las Cucharas is a 640-meter-long coastal bathing beach located in Costa Teguise on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach features white sand substrate and is exposed to moderate wave conditions with a water depth range of 0 to 5 meters. The water mass is classified as naturally superficial coastal type with good ecological status. Activities permitted include surfing and water sports rental.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) according to RD1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological status (biological and physical-chemical). Microbiological contamination episode occurred 4-7 March 2013 due to persistent rainfall.

Risks

Five point pollution sources identified: EBAR Playa de Las Cucharas, EDAM Complejo Puerto Tahíche, EBAR Jablillo-El Pozo, EDAM Hotel Gran Teguise Playa, and EDAM Hotel Gran Meliá Salinas. Potential contamination sources include stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall (episodic, less than 72 hours duration), raw or treated urban wastewater from sewer breaks or emergency overflows (unforeseen, less than 72 hours), and brine discharge from desalination plants (unforeseen, less than 72 hours). Fitoplancton proliferation episodes of cyanobacteria Trichodesmium recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
