Præstø Strand is a 100-meter-long beach composed of fine sand located in the northern part of Præstø, a historic town with 3,887 inhabitants. The beach is 10–15 meters wide and overlooks Præstø Fjord. The water is shallow and child-friendly, with depths remaining under 2 meters up to 150 meters from the shore. The beach is situated within a large natural park area that creates a pleasant atmosphere for bathers.

Water

Præstø Fjord classified as brackish water. Water depth gradually increases from the shore, remaining under 2 metres for 150 metres offshore. Current direction is primarily from the west.

Location

Præstø is an old and charming market town in Vordingborg Municipality. Access to the beach is via Fjordstien, which leads to a large parking area from which the beach is accessible.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Monitoring is conducted during the bathing season (1 June–1 September) using routine sampling for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). The classification is based on control samples taken regularly during 2007–2010 and is revised annually before the bathing season.

Risks

Sixteen overflow structures exist with potential to discharge wastewater into Præstø Fjord during heavy rainfall, though monitoring shows no harmful impact within the designated beach area. The Tubæk stream south of the beach can contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria and swimming in its outlet is discouraged. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae wash-up is low. Risk of chemical pollution (e.g. oil spills) is very low. Glass shards and litter can occasionally occur.
